What Sets Moroccan Clay Apart

Deep, Saturated Pigment

Where Roman Clay leans toward pale, sun-bleached neutrals, Moroccan Clay is formulated for richer, more saturated earth tones.

A Moodier Sheen

The hand-polished surface reflects light unevenly, which reads as warmth and depth in a dimmer room rather than brightness.

No Two Walls Alike

The raw clay compound varies naturally, so no two applications come out identical, even from the same batch.

Breathable, Not Waterproof

It is a breathable, healthy interior finish, but it is not sealed the way tadelakt is. Treat it as a dry-use or light-humidity finish, not a shower wall.

What It Is

An Earth Finish With North African Roots

Moroccan Clay is a hand-polished earth plaster rooted in North African design, prized for its tactile surface and the way it holds a deep, moody variance of light rather than a bright, even reflection. It shares geography with tadelakt but not its job. Tadelakt is engineered to seal against water, while Moroccan Clay is left more porous, which is what gives it its softer, more matte character.

That distinction matters when planning a room. A primary bath can be finished half in tadelakt where water actually lands and half in Moroccan Clay where it does not, using the seam between them as a design line rather than a compromise.

Where It Works

Rooms That Want Atmosphere

Primary Suites

The moody light response suits a room meant for winding down rather than task lighting.

Fireplace Surrounds

Deep pigment options pair naturally with a dark stone or steel hearth surround.

Home Libraries

Low, even light shows off the tactile surface without competing with it.

Spa-Adjacent Bathrooms

Works well on the dry walls of a primary bath, next to, not inside, the wet zone. Keep it off surfaces that take direct water.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is Moroccan Clay waterproof like tadelakt?

No. It shares a region of origin with tadelakt but not its sealing process. Moroccan Clay is a breathable, more porous finish, better suited to dry walls next to a wet zone than to the wet zone itself.

How is it different from Roman Clay?

Roman Clay leans toward pale, sun-bleached neutrals with an even matte texture. Moroccan Clay is formulated for deeper, more saturated earth pigment and a moodier, less uniform sheen.

Does every wall look the same?

No, and that is intentional. The raw clay compound varies naturally from batch to batch, so no two walls come out identical.

What rooms suit it best?

Primary suites, fireplace surrounds, and home libraries, where a deeper, moodier surface reads well in low or even light.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On the dry walls of a bathroom, yes. Not inside the shower or on any surface that takes direct water; that is tadelakt's job.
