What It Is
Mineral, Not Paint
Limewash is a traditional, mineral-based finish: crushed, fired, and slaked limestone mixed with water and natural pigment, brushed on rather than troweled. Where latex paint sits on top of a surface like a plastic film, limewash penetrates it.
That penetration is why it ages the way it does. Instead of peeling or chipping, it weathers into a soft, mottled patina, which is the texture people are usually picturing when they ask for a finish that looks like it has been there for decades.
Applications
Indoors and Out
Exterior masonry and facades are where limewash does something none of our other finishes can. It is UV resistant and breathable enough to hold up to Central Texas sun and the occasional hard rain, without trapping moisture behind the wall.
Indoors, it works well on primary living suites, accent and gallery walls, and high-ceiling great rooms, anywhere a room wants a soft, matte texture rather than a polished one. It is not the choice for a direct wet-splash zone like a shower interior; tadelakt handles that job.

Common Questions
Can limewash go on an exterior wall?
Yes. It is the finish in our collection best suited to exterior masonry and facades, since it is UV resistant and breathable enough to handle direct sun and weather without trapping moisture.
Does limewash look different than the day it's applied?
Yes, on purpose. The finish continues to develop a soft, mottled patina over time. If you want a wall that looks identical five years from now, this is not the finish for that.
Is limewash the same as paint?
No. Paint sits on the surface as a film. Limewash penetrates the substrate, which is why it ages by weathering rather than by peeling or chipping.
Can limewash be used in a shower?
No. It is breathable and UV resistant, not waterproof. For a shower interior or another surface that takes direct, standing water, tadelakt is the finish built for that.
