Plaster Questions

Venetian Plaster vs Tadelakt vs Limewash

All three are lime. They do three different jobs.

Home / Finishes / Lime Finishes Compared

The Short Answer

Three Lime Finishes, Three Jobs

Venetian plaster, tadelakt and limewash are all lime-based wall finishes, but each solves a different problem. Venetian plaster is troweled in thin layers and polished to the sheen of stone, for interior walls. Tadelakt is compacted with a stone and sealed with olive oil soap, so it can take direct water in a shower. Limewash is brushed on and is made to weather outdoors. Koncept Plaster applies all three in Austin, TX.

The quickest way to choose: if the wall gets wet, tadelakt. If it lives outside in the sun, limewash. If you want a polished, stone-like wall indoors, Venetian plaster.

Side by Side

How They Compare

Venetian Plaster

Made from: slaked lime and marble dust.

Applied: troweled on in thin layers, then burnished.

Looks like: polished stone, with soft color movement and a sheen that changes with the light.

Water: fine with normal bathroom humidity. Not for surfaces that take direct water.

Upkeep: a light wax every few years. No repainting cycle.

Best for: living rooms, kitchens, fireplace surrounds and hallways. More on Venetian plaster.

Tadelakt

Made from: lime plaster mixed with clay.

Applied: troweled on, compacted with a smooth stone, then burnished with olive oil soap.

Looks like: a soft, slightly irregular sheen, more matte than Venetian, in warm earthy tones.

Water: the one of the three built for direct water: shower walls, tub surrounds, backsplashes.

Upkeep: reapply the soap-based seal now and then. No acidic cleaners.

Best for: showers, tubs and wet rooms. More on tadelakt.

Limewash

Made from: crushed, fired and slaked limestone, water and natural pigment.

Applied: brushed on, more like a wash than a plaster.

Looks like: flat, matte and mottled. The patina keeps developing after it goes on.

Water: breathable and UV resistant, but not waterproof. Not for a shower.

Upkeep: it changes as it ages, and that is the look. If you want a wall that looks identical in five years, pick something else.

Best for: exterior masonry and facades, and soft, matte interior walls. More on limewash.

Choosing

Start With Where the Wall Is

In a shower, tub surround or backsplash: tadelakt. It is the only one of the three made for direct, standing water. Venetian plaster and limewash both handle humidity, but water running down them every day will wear them. Our guide to whether is tadelakt waterproof enough for a shower covers how it holds up.

Outside, or in full sun: limewash. It is UV resistant and breathable enough to handle Central Texas sun and the occasional hard rain without trapping moisture behind the wall.

Indoors, polished: Venetian plaster. It reads as material rather than paint, and it suits large, unbroken walls where the sheen can move with the light.

Indoors, soft and matte: limewash works, and so do Roman clay and American Clay, which add their own strengths. See what American Clay is and where it fits.

Cost and Effort

What Drives the Price

With any of these finishes, the price is skilled labor plus material, and material prices move with suppliers and tariffs. Limewash is brushed on, so it usually takes the least time per wall. Venetian plaster takes several troweled and burnished coats. Tadelakt is the most hands-on of the three, because the stone compacting and soap sealing have to be timed while the plaster cures.

The wall underneath matters too: its condition, its size, and how many corners and openings it has. Tell us about the space and we will give you a clear scope and price before anything begins. For real numbers, see what Venetian plaster costs in Austin.

FAQ

Common Questions

Which is the most waterproof: Venetian plaster, tadelakt or limewash?

Tadelakt. It is compacted with a stone and sealed with olive oil soap, which reacts with the lime to close the surface. That is why it is used in showers. Venetian plaster and limewash handle humidity but are not made for direct water.

Are all three lime plaster?

Yes. All three are built on lime, which is why they breathe and cure by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air rather than drying like paint. Venetian plaster adds marble dust, tadelakt adds clay, and limewash is thinned with water and brushed on.

Which one can go on an exterior wall?

Limewash. It is the finish in our collection best suited to exterior masonry and facades, because it is UV resistant and breathable.

Which one looks the most polished?

Venetian plaster. It is burnished to the depth and sheen of polished stone. Tadelakt has a softer, more matte sheen, and limewash is flat and chalky.

Can I use limewash or Venetian plaster in a bathroom?

On a dry wall, yes. Both handle normal bathroom humidity on a vanity wall. Inside the shower, use tadelakt.
