Plaster Questions
Is Tadelakt Waterproof Enough for a Shower?
Yes, when it is compacted and sealed correctly. Here is what makes it work, and what keeps it working in Austin.
The Short Answer
Yes, If It Is Done Right
Yes. Tadelakt is waterproof enough for a shower when it is applied and sealed correctly. The lime plaster is compacted with a smooth stone and burnished with olive oil soap, and the soap reacts with the lime to close the surface against water. It has lined hammams in Morocco for centuries. Koncept Plaster applies tadelakt for showers, tub surrounds and backsplashes in Austin, TX.
Two things decide whether it lasts: how it is applied, and how it is cleaned. Both are covered below.

How It Works
The Seal Is the Surface
Most wall finishes in a shower depend on a sealer rolled on afterward. Tadelakt does not. The plaster goes on wet, is compacted with a stone before it cures, and is burnished with soap until the surface is dense enough to shed water instead of absorbing it.
That makes the technique the whole job. The timing of the burnishing, the pressure of the stone and the soap application all affect whether the seal holds. It is not a finish to learn on your own shower.
In Austin
Hard Water Changes the Cleaning Routine
Austin's tap water is on the hard side, so showers here build up mineral spots. On tile, people reach for vinegar or an acidic descaler. On tadelakt, don't. Acid dissolves lime, and it will etch the surface.
What works instead: squeegee or towel the walls after a shower so mineral water does not sit and dry. Clean with a mild soap, never an acidic or harsh chemical cleaner. Reapply the soap-based seal every so often to keep water beading on the surface.
Where It Works
Wet Areas It Suits
Shower Walls
One seamless surface with no grout lines to scrub or regrout.
Tub Surrounds
The same water resistance, with a softer look than tile around a soaking tub.
Backsplashes and Sinks
Kitchen backsplashes and prep-sink surrounds get the same seal, and wipe clean.
Vanity Walls
Outside the splash zone it works as a warm, tactile wall finish.
Be Realistic
What It Will Not Do
Tadelakt is a hand finish, so it has slight irregularities and visible hand movement. That is the look, not a defect. It is also gentler than glazed tile: it wants mild soap, not scrubbing powder.
It is not the choice for a surface that sits in standing water, or for an outdoor wall that goes through hard freeze-thaw cycles. Under a roofline, it handles moisture well.
Other plaster finishes are not a substitute in a shower. Venetian plaster, limewash, Roman clay and American Clay all handle bathroom humidity on a dry wall, but none is built for direct water. Our guide to Venetian plaster vs tadelakt vs limewash explains the difference.
FAQ
Common Questions
Is tadelakt waterproof or just water resistant?
Applied and burnished correctly, it sheds water well enough for shower walls, which is how it has been used in Moroccan hammams for centuries. The seal is part of the surface, and it stays at its best when the soap-based seal is renewed from time to time.
How do I clean a tadelakt shower with Austin's hard water?
Squeegee or towel the walls after showering so mineral water does not dry on them, and clean with a mild soap. Never use vinegar, lemon or an acidic descaler. Acid dissolves lime and etches the surface.
How often does tadelakt need to be resealed?
Every so often, depending on how much the shower is used. A light reapplication of the soap-based seal keeps water beading on the surface. Ask for a written care routine when the job is finished.
Is tadelakt better than tile in a shower?
It is different. Tadelakt gives you one seamless surface with no grout lines, and with proper care it holds up the way tile does. Tile is harder and tolerates harsher cleaners. If you want seamless and are happy with a gentle cleaning routine, tadelakt is a strong choice.
Can Venetian plaster or limewash go inside a shower?
No. Both handle bathroom humidity on a dry wall, but neither is built for direct water. For a shower interior, tadelakt is the right finish.
Can I see tadelakt before I commit?
Yes. The Koncept Plaster showroom at 2404 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703 has full-scale sample walls. Visits are by appointment: call 737-895-4587.
Where can I compare plaster finishes and costs?
See Venetian plaster vs tadelakt vs limewash for how the finishes differ, what Venetian plaster costs in Austin for pricing and what American Clay plaster is for a clay option. All eight finishes are on our finishes page.
